Investors in private markets expect to earn a premium relative to comparable public markets for the illiquidity of locking up their capital for years at a time. Additionally, most limited partners attempt to exceed the median return in private markets as well. However, measuring this excess return is no trivial matter. In this session, LPs will discuss theory and best practices for measuring outperformance in their private markets portfolios, including:

For nearly thirty years, the endowment approach to portfolio construction as popularized by David Swensen at Yale has come to dominate institutional investing, often replacing traditional Mean Variance Optimization. This style of diversified multi-asset class investing is known for its large exposure to alternative investments and private markets. In 2022, such portfolios substantially outperformed conventional 60/40 portfolios, but does the Yale model still have relevance today? Has a naïve approach to replicating the endowment portfolio resulted in crowded trades in private markets, and should investors following the same process of searching for new strategies and managers look elsewhere today?

The question of whether positive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings are correlated with positive excess returns has been the center of debate in the investment community for some time now. In public markets, the evidence has been mixed and the debate has become politically charged. In private markets, it is even more difficult to collect and verify data on ESG strategies and performance which can make the conversation even more challenging. Recent research from Pitchbook has found that GPs with an ESG focus – as proxied by PRI signatory status – has little to no influence on returns. Suffice it to say the evidence is mixed and opinions are divided. Participants will get to share their experience and perspectives on the connection between ESG and investment returns.

Targeting impact is often coined as a sacrifice of financial performance. As the impact investment space is expanding and now becoming a significant asset class, investors can now challenge this assumption. Has impact delivered its positive outcomes and good financial returns to pioneering impact investors? Where are the impact x return opportunities now in private markets? Does impact pre-figure a new allocation, risk and performance measurement framework? Is it time to change views and consider achieving both positive impact and outsized returns?

The dispersion of returns or difference between best and worst managers in private markets is nearly ten times that of public markets, and the persistence of returns– for good and bad – is also much stronger across time. This makes manager selection all the more important; if you cannot work with the best managers, perhaps you shouldn’t invest in private markets at all. This could mean trying to get capacity with the most successful established VC funds, or maybe trying to identify top performers amongst emerging managers and spin-outs. In this conversation, LPs will discuss and debate their strategies for identifying and partnering with the best managers.

Although lagged relative to public markets, returns in private markets still display sensitivity to common underlying economic factors with stocks and bonds, such as earnings growth rates and interest rates. Robust fund raising and investment activity over the last few years, fueled in part by cheap debt and abundant liquidity, has resulted in strong returns and substantial assets under management in both private equity and private credit. However, today things are decidedly different. Interest rates have risen sharply, earnings growth has slowed, and investors are concerned about returns going forward. With this in mind, what are investor expectations around future returns for the next vintage in private markets and what are their major concerns?

2.15 PM | Introduction & Welcome
An explainer about the purpose and objectives of the summit – to raise awareness of different topics on the DEI agenda, then reimagine how next-generation firms can be designed with inclusivity at their core.
2.30 PM | Topic 1: What does neurodiversity mean to private capital outperformance?
Neurodiversity, the appreciation that people experience and interact differently in the world, is gaining traction within the DEI agenda. This panel will shine a light on the subject, including how it can support access to new talent and increase representation in decision-making processes.
2.50 PM | Topic 2: Gender diversity - continuing the upward trend or guilty of "women washing"?
Is the industry at a tipping point for female representation or just paying lip service? Whilst more non-investment roles are now occupied by women and mid and junior-level representation in deal teams is also trending upwards, the statistics are slow moving. Are organizations sincere about real change, or is it tokenism? What should firms be doing to attract, retain and promote this talent? How does the industry build flexibility for all into its roles?
3.10 PM | Topic 3: What can the industry do to advance ethnic minorities?
Representation among ethnic minority groups drops as seniority increases. This session will explore the causes, the challenges, and the steps firms can take to improve the situation.

How would it outperform?
